Aruba Road Trip: 4 Days of Wrecks, Reefs, and Rum

Forget the all-inclusive resort. Rent a car and conquer Aruba in 4 days. From the California Lighthouse to Baby Beach, this is the road trip you need.

Think you know Aruba? Think again.

Most people fly here, shuttle to a high-rise hotel, and don't move for a week. They sip weak cocktails. They burn in the sun. They see absolutely nothing.

Don't be those people.

Aruba is small, safe, and begging to be explored. It sits outside the hurricane belt, which means the weather is almost always perfect. But the real magic isn't in the lobby. It's out on the road.

You need four days. You need a rental car. And you need to wake up early.

Don't Miss

The wind-blasted view from California Lighthouse. Snorkeling the shipwreck at Malmok Beach. The infinity pool at Rum Reef overlooking Baby Beach. The famous Fofoti trees (look, don't touch).

Get Behind the Wheel

Skip the taxis. Ignore the tour buses. You need your own wheels.

Driving here is a breeze. You can loop the entire island without stress. I use Rent Cars to lock in a deal before landing. It gives you total freedom. Chase the sun. Dodge the rain. Go where the buses can't.

First stop? Super Food Plaza. This isn't just a grocery store. It's an experience. Stock up on Dutch cheeses, fresh pastries, and paprika chips. You need road snacks. Trust me on the bakery section.

Face the Wind North

Drive north until the pavement ends. You'll see the California Lighthouse rising from the dust. It's named after a ship that wrecked nearby.

Pay the $5. Climb the spiral staircase. It’s tight. It’s steep. Do it anyway. The view from the top is wild. You see the ocean smashing against the rugged coastline. Hold onto your hat. The wind up there is no joke.

Need to cool off? Hit Arashi Beach just down the road. No hotels. No noise. Just dunes and water.

For real action, go to Malmok Beach. It's a tiny strip of sand, but you aren't here to tan. You're here to swim. There is a shipwreck right off the coast. Grab your snorkel gear. Jump in. You’ll see pelicans diving and fish swarming the rusted metal. It is absolutely worth it.

The Tourist Trap (Worth Seeing)

You’ve seen the photos. The twisted tree on the white sand. That’s Eagle Beach.

Let’s get the facts straight. Everyone calls them Divi Divi trees. They aren't. They are Fofoti trees. The trade winds twisted them into that shape. Take the photo. But do not climb them. Respect the landmark.

Further down is Palm Beach. This is the main vein. High-rise hotels, casinos, noise. It’s fun if you want energy. Walk through the resorts. Grab a drink. Watch the crowds.

Hungry? You have options. We hit "Sexy Shrimp" for exactly what you'd expect. Great drinks. Solid seafood. If you want Italian, try Gianni’s. But book a table early. The line is insane.

Walk the Capital

Give Oranjestad a morning. It’s colorful, walkable, and packed with history.

Hunt for the blue horse sculptures. They are scattered all over town. Check out Fort Zoutman and the Willem III Tower. It was supposed to be a lighthouse. They ran out of cash and made it a clock tower instead. You have to appreciate the pivot.

Shopping here is a mix. You have luxury brands at Royal Plaza and local flea markets for souvenirs. Bring cash for the stalls. For everything else, I used my Wise card to save on fees.

The Real Payoff

This is why you rented the car. Drive south to Baby Beach.

It takes about 40 minutes from the hotel zone. Most tourists are too lazy to make the drive. Good. More room for you.

Baby Beach is a shallow lagoon protected by a natural reef. The water is emerald green and calm. It looks like a massive swimming pool. You can wade out for hundreds of yards.

Bring the snorkel gear. The coral near the lagoon entrance is alive with massive fish. Visibility varies, but the marine life is top-tier.

Done swimming? Walk to Rum Reef. It’s a bar and grill right next door. They have an infinity pool overlooking the ocean. Order the chicken. Get a cocktail. Get in the pool. This is the life.

Escape to the Island

Got an extra day? Book a trip to De Palm Island.

It’s an all-inclusive private island. You take a ferry over. Food, drinks, and snorkel gear are all covered. They even have a water park.

This is where you find the flamingos. They have a designated area where these pink giants roam. You can get close. Just give them space. Seeing them against that blue Caribbean water is surreal.

Aruba isn't just a beach chair. It's a playground. But you have to be willing to find it. Pack your bag. Rent the car. Go.
