Caparaó Guide: Emerald Pools and High-Altitude Coffee
Forget the coast. Explore Caparaó on the Minas Gerais border. Hike to emerald pools, brave freezing waterfalls, and drink Brazil's best coffee.
Think you know Brazil? Think again. Most people hear "Minas Gerais" and picture colonial churches. They hear "Espírito Santo" and picture crowded beaches. They are missing the point.
Welcome to Caparaó. This region straddles the border. It is rugged. It is raw. It hides some of the most insane water you will ever see. We aren't here to sightsee. We are here to get wet.
Don't Miss
The bone-chilling dip at Poço das Antas. The cliff jump at Poço da Laje. The world-class tasting at Fazenda Ninho da Águia.
The Emerald Challenge
First stop: Poço das Antas. Don't debate it. Just go. Entry is about R$ 30. You pay at a small house. Cash is king here.
The trail is roughly 2 kilometers. It’s not flat. You will sweat. Give it 45 minutes. Then you see it. The water is emerald green. It looks like glass.

Here is the reality check. The water is freezing. Absolutely icy. Bring a towel. Bring a spare shirt. You need them. But you have to jump in. The color is unreal. Bring goggles. Seeing that green tint from underwater changes everything.
Beyond the Main Attraction
Don't stop at the main pool. Most tourists do. Don't be them. Head down to Poço da Tartaruga and Poço do Balaio. They sit right next to each other.
The water is just as clear. Just as cold. The difference? You have to work for it. Expect to crawl over rocks. It’s a scramble. The solitude is worth every scrape.
Want something easier? Hit Cachoeira do Rogério near the entrance. No hiking required. It’s often voted the most beautiful waterfall in the park. It earns that title.
Where to Crash
You need a base camp. We picked Sítio Serra Verde in Iúna, on the Espírito Santo side. It’s strategic. You stay close to the pools and the park entrance.
They have options. Camping costs about R$ 120 for two people. Chalets run around R$ 280. We took the chalet. It comes with a smart TV, minibar, and breakfast. Worth the splurge. The view of the Três Marias mountains is killer. At night? The sky explodes with stars.
Chasing Waterfalls
Wake up early. Head to Parque Hidrolândia. Entry is cheap, around R$ 20. This isn't just one spot. It's a complex of waterfalls.

Start at Poço da Laje. There is a perfect rock for jumping. I couldn't resist. The sun wasn't even out. I jumped anyway. You should too.
Pro tip: Walk further. Leave the crowds at the entrance. Go up the river about 20 minutes. You will find small, private pools. No noise. Just you and the river.
Into the National Park
Drive to Vale Verde. It sits inside the National Park of Caparaó. The best part? No entry fee. You just identify yourself at the gate.
The drive takes over an hour from Hidrolândia. The road is rough. If you have a low car, drive carefully. But look at the water. It is completely transparent. Crystal clear.

We also checked out Poço do Egito. Another R$ 20 well spent. Easy access. Green water. Then we tried Vale Encantado. It sits at nearly 2,000 meters altitude. It was foggy. Misty. Moody. You feel the altitude here.
The Coffee Culture
You are in coffee country. Some of the best beans in Brazil grow right here. We went to Fazenda Ninho da Águia. This place is legendary. They have won "Best Coffee in Brazil" multiple times.
The tour is free. Yes, free. The owners take you through the plantation. They explain the agro-ecology system. They show you the roasting process. It’s educational without being boring.
Then comes the tasting. We tried three different roasts. It ruins supermarket coffee for you forever. You will buy a bag. Maybe two. It’s the perfect end to a trip that shocks your system.
Pack your bags. Get to Caparaó. The water is waiting.
