Costa dos Corais: Brazil’s Wild Answer to the Caribbean
Forget Cancun. Brazil's Costa dos Corais offers 120km of reefs, wild beaches, and adventure. From Maragogi to Carneiros, here is your guide.
Think you know paradise? Think again. You’ve heard of Aruba. Cancun. Punta Cana. Forget them. They are overpriced traps packed with tourists. I found something better. I found the Costa dos Corais in Northeast Brazil.
This isn't just a beach trip. It is 120 kilometers of protected reef. It is wild. It is raw. We are talking about the "Brazilian Caribbean." But honestly? It has a soul the Caribbean lost years ago.

Pedal the Ocean
First stop: Maragogi. This is the heavyweight champion. We set up base at Ponta de Mangue beach. It sits right on the border with Pernambuco. The water here is spectacular. But don't just stare at it. Get in it.
We didn't just swim. We rode water bikes. Yes, bikes on the water. It sounds ridiculous. It looks ridiculous. But it is incredible. You float over the reefs. You pedal through neon blue water. No engine noise. Just you and the ocean. You look down and see the coral. Dark green means the coral is alive. Respect it. Don't touch it. Just glide.
The Neighbor You Ignore
Everyone goes to Maragogi. But right next door is São José da Coroa Grande. Most tourists skip it. That is their mistake. It is your opportunity. This place is undeveloped in the best way possible.
It lacks the fame of São Miguel dos Milagres. That means fewer selfie sticks. São José boasts 38 natural pools. Thirty-eight. You take a catamaran out. You dive. The water is warm. The vibe is chill. Explore this place with a conscience. It is fragile. Treat it that way.
Don't Miss
The sunrise water bike tour in Maragogi. The empty pools of São José da Coroa Grande. The sunset view from the church at Praia dos Carneiros. The "Path of Moses" sandbar walk (check the tide charts first).
Walls of Stone
We headed to Porto de Galinhas. Specifically Muro Alto. The name literally means "High Wall." A massive reef wall blocks the ocean swell. The result? A giant, natural swimming pool. It is calm. It is perfect.
Rent a kayak. Paddle out to the reef wall. If you have kids, this is the spot. No waves. Just glass. Porto de Galinhas isn't technically part of the Costa dos Corais protection zone, but you are already here. You cannot skip it. It is iconic for a reason.

My Top Pick: Japaratinga
Let's talk about Japaratinga. This is the spot. If I had to choose one place to return to, this is it. We hit the beach behind the Barreira de Boqueirão. The cliffs are stunning. The crowds are thin. It feels like a discovery.
Then there is Praia do Toque. You need to take a Jangada here. These are traditional wooden sailing rafts. Don't take a speed boat. Take the raft. Support the locals. We arrived at low tide. The water was crystal clear. Even at 0.4 tide, it was beautiful. But the tide matters. It matters a lot.
The Math That Matters
Here is the part nobody tells you. You live and die by the tide chart here. You want the Galés (the famous pools)? They are 6 kilometers offshore. They are deep. You want the pools at Barra Grande? They are closer. They are shallower. Better for non-swimmers.
But the real prize is the Caminho de Moisés (Moses Path) in Barra Grande. It is a sandbar that splits the ocean. You can walk hundreds of meters out to sea. But you need a tide lower than 0.2. We had 0.4. We saw the path, but we didn't get the full "parting of the seas" experience. Check the charts. Plan your trip around the moon.

The Final Challenge
We finished at Praia dos Carneiros. It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. The little church on the beach is famous. It was crowded, but the beauty is undeniable. The water was a scandal. An absolute spectacle.
Get a local Jangadeiro (raftsman). Don't just book the first guy you see. Find a recommendation. Take your time. Some rush you. The good ones let you soak it in.
So, are you going to keep booking the same resort in the Caribbean? Or are you ready to head south and see what real natural beauty looks like? The reefs are waiting. The rafts are ready. Pack your gear. Get moving.
