Conquer Chapada dos Veadeiros: Ice Pools & 45m Drops
Skip the beaches. Head inland. Discover the freezing emerald pools, steep trails, and raw energy of Brazil's Chapada dos Veadeiros.
Think you know Brazil? Think again.
Brazil is massive. Most people only scratch the surface. They stick to the coastline. They sip caipirinhas on the sand.
That's fine for them. But you want more. You want the raw, unfiltered core of the country.
Forget the crowded beaches of Rio. Ditch the tourist traps of the coast. It’s time to head inland.
Deep in the heart of the Brazilian savanna lies a place that will test your limits. Chapada dos Veadeiros. Red earth. Endless skies. Roaring water.
This isn't a luxury resort vacation. This is a rugged expedition into the Cerrado. You will sweat. You will freeze. You will love every single second of it.
The landscape here looks like another planet. Twisted trees claw at the sky. Vast plateaus stretch out to the horizon.
Pack your gear. Charge your camera. Let's hit the trail.
Ready to Get Lost in the Cerrado?
The journey starts in Alto Paraíso de Goiás. The name literally translates to High Paradise. It lives up to the hype.
You wake up early. The air is crisp. The sun is already threatening to bake the red dirt.
Your first target is the Loquinhas waterfall complex. It sits right on the edge of town. Don't let the proximity fool you. The wild is right there waiting.
You pull into the massive parking lot. You pay the 40 Reais entry fee. Absolutely worth it. Every single step.

The moment you step past the gate, the temperature drops. The dry heat of the savanna gives way to the damp, heavy air of the forest.
You can hear the water before you see it. A low rumble echoing through the trees. It pulls you in.
The Loquinhas Reality Check
The trail here is deceptive. It's a two-kilometer stretch of wooden decks and sturdy staircases.
They call it a "Nutella" trail. Easy. Accessible. Built for anyone.
The wooden boardwalks wind through the dense foliage. They protect the fragile ecosystem below.
Stay on the path. The Cerrado is delicate. It demands your respect.
But look past the handrails. The jungle is thick. The canopy blocks out the sky.
You hear the rustle of leaves. A flash of movement in the canopy. The wildlife here doesn't hide.
Keep your eyes peeled. Wild monkeys swing through the branches right above your head. They are watching you.
There are eighteen different pools scattered along this path. Eighteen chances to wash off the dust of the road.
Don't rush. Take your time. Every single pool has its own distinct character and color.
Plunge Into the Ice
Stop at Poço Pajé. Look at the water. It's a piercing, radioactive emerald green.
It looks like a Mexican cenote. It feels like a glacier.
The water is freezing. Absolute ice.
You stand on the edge of the wooden platform. You look down into the abyss.
Your brain tells you to back away. The water looks too cold. Too deep.
Ignore it. Take the leap.
The surface breaks. The cold swallows you whole.
When you surface, you are gasping for air. Every nerve ending is firing. You have never felt more alive.
Push through the cold. Open your eyes underwater. The clarity is mind-bending.
Bring your waterproof camera. The shots you get here will blow your mind.
Keep moving up the trail until you hit Poço da Vovó. Time it for high noon.
The sun slices straight down through the trees. It sets the pool on fire. The light rays dancing underwater are pure magic.
The Raw Heart of Alto Paraíso
Saturday morning hits. Skip the hotel breakfast. Get out into the streets.
Head straight to the local farmer's market in Alto Paraíso. This is the real pulse of the town.
No filters. No tourist gloss. Just raw, local energy.

Farmers sell vegetables pulled fresh from the Cerrado soil. Artisans lay out intricate silver jewelry.
The smell of fresh street food fills the air. It mixes with the scent of burning incense and damp earth.
This region is famous for its crystals. Huge, raw stones pulled from the earth.
Buy one. Feel the weight of it in your hand. Carry a piece of the Chapada with you.
Talk to the locals. Ask them about the unmarked trails. The ones missing from your GPS. Get lost in the vibe.
Face the Monster of Almécegas
Time to dial up the adrenaline. Head to Fazenda São Bento.
Drop the 70 Reais at the gate. You get access to three waterfalls. São Bento. Almécegas II. And the crown jewel, Almécegas I.
The hike to Almécegas I is a test of endurance. It weeds out the casual tourists.
The trail here is no joke. It kicks up immediately.
Steep inclines. Jagged rocks. Your lungs will burn. Your legs will scream. Keep climbing.
You navigate over massive boulders. You grip the rough stone to keep your balance.
There is no shade. The Cerrado sun is relentless. Drink your water. Keep moving.
The sun beats down on your back. The red dust coats your boots. You push harder.
Then the trees break. You step out onto the ridge.

Almécegas I drops 45 meters down a massive, sheer rock face. The sound is deafening.
A few years ago, the wind here nearly claimed my drone. The elements in this canyon are brutal. They don't care about your tech.
Stand at the edge of the precipice. Feel the mist hitting your face. Look down at the tiny figures swimming in the dark water below.
When you finally reach the viewpoint, the sheer drop makes your stomach flip.
You can hike down to the base. It’s steep. It’s slippery. Do it anyway.
Swimming at the bottom of that 45-meter monster is an entirely different experience. The current is strong. The spray blinds you.
This is why you came. This is the scale of the Chapada.
Don't Miss
The high-noon light piercing the emerald water at Poço da Vovó. Haggling for raw, uncut crystals at the Saturday Alto Paraíso market. Standing at the dizzying 45-meter precipice of Almécegas I.
The Part Nobody Tells You About Timing
Listen closely. Timing is everything out here.
Try coming in February during the rainy season. I dare you.
The rivers swell. The trails flood. The park rangers lock the gates. You will sit in your room watching the rain.
You must hit this place during the dry season.
The skies are aggressively blue. The air is crisp. The water is at its most transparent.
The contrast between the blazing sun and the freezing pools is exactly what your body needs.
Chapada dos Veadeiros isn't for the faint of heart. It demands energy. It demands respect.
Are you ready to trade the beach chair for the jungle trail? Book the ticket. Prove it.
