Lençóis Maranhenses: Brazil’s Wildest Sand-and-Water Playground
Think you know Brazil? Wait until you hike, swim, and get lost in the surreal dunes and lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses. Adventure starts here.
Think you know Brazil? Think again.
You haven’t seen wild until you’ve stood on the edge of a dune, wind in your face, staring at a thousand turquoise lagoons stitched into endless white sand. Welcome to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. The place that rips up the rulebook on what a desert can be.

Ready to Get Lost?
Skip the tourist bus. Rent a 4x4. Or better yet, lace up your boots and walk. The best way to feel this place is on foot. Every step, a new lagoon. Every crest, a view that punches you in the gut.
The park is massive. Over 600 square miles of shifting dunes and rain-fed pools. But don’t expect to just wander in. You need a plan. Three main bases. Three totally different vibes.
Santo Amaro. Closest to the action. Raw, rustic, real. Fewer hotels, fewer crowds. But the best access to the wildest circuits—Betânia, Emendadas, Lagoa da América. Want to see scarlet ibises explode into the sky at dawn? Take the day trip to Primeira Cruz. Absolutely worth it. Every single step.
Barreirinhas. The hub. More restaurants, more beds, more tour options. It’s the launchpad for the classic Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita circuits. Want to see it all from above? Book a flight. The aerial view will fry your brain. But Barreirinhas is busy. Less charm, more convenience.
Atins. The rebel. Harder to reach, pricier, but dripping with style. This is where the dunes kiss the sea. Chill in a hammock, eat fresh seafood, then hit the trails. The Ponta do Mangue circuit is legendary. And yes, you can surf the river mouth.
The Part Nobody Tells You
Think you’re tough? Prove it. Hike the full Lençóis crossing. Three to six days. Atins to Santo Amaro. Sleep in native oases—Baixa Grande, Queimada dos Britos. Meet the people who call this sand-and-water maze home. No hotel, no Wi-Fi, just you and the stars. This is the real deal.

Don’t come in the wrong season. June to September is prime time. The lagoons are full, the skies are clear, and the heat is just right for a midday swim. Miss it, and you’ll find dry bowls where water should be. Timing is everything.
Hungry for More?
Don’t stop at the dunes. Maranhão is packed with secrets. Hit São Luís for colonial mansions and wild June festivals. Hop a boat to Alcântara—ruins, legends, and a time warp you won’t believe. Or head inland to Chapada das Mesas. Waterfalls, rock arches, and swimming holes so clear you’ll forget the ocean exists.
Want to go deeper? Find a local guide. The best stories aren’t in any brochure. They’re told over a plate of moqueca, under a thatched roof, with sand still between your toes.

Don't Miss
The sunrise hike to Lagoa Bonita. The hidden oasis at Baixa Grande. That riverside shack in Atins serving grilled fish you’ll dream about for years.
Your Move
Still scrolling? Stop. Book the ticket. Pack light. Bring your wildest self. Lençóis Maranhenses isn’t just a place. It’s a dare. Are you in?
