Itacaré: The Jungle Coast That Makes You Earn It
Forget the resorts. Itacaré demands you hike for your beaches and eat chocolate on your steak. A no-nonsense guide to Bahia's wild coast.
Think you know Bahia? Think again. Most tourists stick to the easy spots. The paved roads. The resort lines. Itacaré is different. It’s wild. It’s raw. And it makes you work for it.
Here, the Atlantic Rainforest doesn’t just meet the ocean. It crashes into it. You’re not here to lounge by a generic pool. You’re here to sweat, hike, and taste things you didn’t know existed. Ready to get lost?
The Part Nobody Tells You
First things first. You can’t fly straight here. Good. That keeps the lazy crowds away. Your best bet is flying into Ilhéus. From there, it’s a ninety-minute drive north.
You could fly into Salvador. Don't. That’s a five-hour mission involving a ferry. Unless you love logistical nightmares, stick to Ilhéus.
Base Camp: Praia da Concha
Once you arrive, you need a strategy. Don't just book anywhere. Set up base camp at Praia da Concha. It’s the sweet spot. You’re close to the downtown buzz but still near the water.

Want the only place with sand literally at your doorstep in the center? Look at Hotel Aldeia do Mar. Oceanfront pool. Killer breakfast. It’s the perfect place to crash after your legs turn to jelly on the trails.
Earn Your View
Here’s the deal. Itacaré has two types of beaches. Urban and Rural. Urban beaches are easy. You walk up, you sit down. Fine for a warm-up. But you didn't come this far for "fine."
You want the rural beaches. These are the legends. But there’s a catch. You have to hike.
Take Prainha. It’s my absolute favorite. But it demands a 50-minute trek from Praia da Ribeira. You walk through dense green. You wonder if you’re lost. Then the trees break. You see it. Absolutely worth it. Every single step.
Then there’s Jeribucaçu. The trail is shorter. But the return trip? A steep climb that will test your lung capacity. Don't attempt it unless you're ready to sweat.
Don't Miss
The Four Beaches Trail. Hit Engenhoca, Havaizinho, Gamboa, and Itacarezinho in one go. Hire a guide so you can get a ride back from the last beach. Smart, not lazy. The Sunset Canoe. Skip the crowded viewpoint at Ponta do Xaréu. Rent a Hawaiian canoe and paddle to Praia do Pontal. Magic. The Tree Circuit. At Praia da Ribeira, hit the arborism course. It ends with a zipline right onto the beach.
Beyond the Saltwater
When your legs need a break from the sand, hit the river. The Rio de Contas isn't just a body of water. It's a highway to the interior. Get on a boat. Head upstream. You’ll find the Cleandro waterfall deep in the forest.

You’re in the Cocoa Coast. You need to understand what that actually means. Visit Vila Rosa. It’s an old chocolate factory. See how the sausage is made—or in this case, the chocolate. It’s a history lesson that tastes good.
Nights on the Strip
When the sun drops, everyone heads to Pituba. If you look at a map, you won’t find it. It’s officially Rua Pedro Longo now. Locals stick to the old name. This is the pulse of the town.
Walk down the cobblestones. The energy is infectious. You need to try "mel de cacau." It’s fresh cacao juice. Cold. Sweet. Refreshing. Nothing like chocolate milk. Grab a slice of cake at Saravá.

Feeling brave? Go back to the restaurant at Aldeia do Mar, the Sá. They serve a filet mignon with chocolate sauce. Sounds insane? Maybe. But it’s one of the best things I ate on the entire trip.
Itacaré isn't a vacation. It's an experience. Pack your boots. Leave your expectations at the airport. Go now.
