Thailand Budget Flights: Nok Air Review & Surat Thani to Bangkok Guide

Save money on Thai flights. A practical guide to the Surat Thani to Bangkok route, Nok Air baggage rules, and getting from Don Mueang Airport to the city.

Flying in Southeast Asia is incredibly affordable, but if you do not know the rules, those $30 tickets can quickly double in price.

I recently flew from Surat Thani to Bangkok using Nok Air to save money after visiting the islands. Many travelers default to flying directly out of expensive private airports like Koh Samui, but with a little extra planning, you can save over $100 per person. Here is the exact strategy to navigate the budget airline ecosystem without getting hit by hidden fees.

Quick Facts: Surat Thani (URT) to Bangkok (DMK)

  • Route: Surat Thani International Airport (URT) to Don Mueang (DMK)
  • Flight Duration: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Typical Cost: $25 - $40 USD (one way)
  • Airline: Nok Air (Low-cost carrier)
  • Best For: Travelers leaving Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, or Koh Tao on a budget

The Budget Strategy: Why Surat Thani?

If you are staying in the Gulf Islands (Samui, Phangan, Tao), the most convenient option is flying directly out of Samui Airport (USM). However, this convenience comes at a premium because the airport is privately owned by Bangkok Airways.

Instead, we took a ferry to the mainland and a bus to Surat Thani Airport (URT). It adds travel time, but the savings are substantial.

Departure Airport Avg. Cost (One Way) Total Travel Time Best For Koh Samui (USM) $100 - $150 USD ~1.5 hours Short trips / Luxury Surat Thani (URT) $25 - $40 USD ~5 - 6 hours Backpackers / Budget

⚠️ Watch Out: The "Total Travel Time" for Surat Thani includes the ferry and bus transfer from the islands. Plan a full travel day for this option.

Booking Your Flight: The Golden Rules

I always start my search on Google Flights to visualize price trends across the month. You will often see prices drop significantly on Tuesdays or Wednesdays compared to weekends.

Once you find the flight, do not book through third-party sites like Kiwi, MyTrip, or eDreams.

My Booking Protocol:

  1. Search: Use Google Flights to identify the best route.
  2. Book: Go directly to the airline's website (Nok Air, AirAsia, Thai Lion Air).
  3. Pay: Use a fee-free travel card (like Wise or Revolut) to pay in THB.

Booking directly protects you. If a flight is canceled, airlines are legally required to assist you. If you book via a third party, you are often stuck in customer service limbo with a bot.

Luggage Logistics: Don't Get Fined

Low-cost carriers operate on thin margins and make their profit on baggage fees. The rules are strict.

The 7kg Carry-On Rule Most carriers, including Nok Air, allow 7kg (15 lbs) of carry-on luggage for free. This usually includes:

  • One main bag (approx. 56cm x 36cm x 23cm)
  • One small personal item (laptop bag/handbag)

If you are traveling with a 50L+ backpack, do not try to sneak it on. Gate agents often weigh bags before boarding.

Luggage Option Cost Online Cost at Gate Strategy Carry-On (7kg) Free N/A Pack electronics & valuables here Checked Bag (15kg) ~$10 - $15 USD ~$40 - $60 USD Pre-book online strictly

Pro Tip: If traveling as a couple, book one checked bag (15-20kg) to share for heavy toiletries and clothes, and keep your carry-ons light with just electronics and documents.

The Low-Cost Experience: Nok Air

We flew Nok Air, easily spotted by the yellow bird beak painted on the aircraft nose. It is a reliable, no-frills experience.

  • Legroom: Tight (approx. 29-30 inches). If you are over 6ft, consider paying extra for an exit row.
  • Entertainment: Non-existent. Download Netflix/podcasts before you get to the airport.
  • Food: Snacks available for purchase (Instant noodles: ~60 THB / $1.70 USD).
  • Climate: Freezing. The AC is always on full blast. Wear long pants and bring a hoodie.

Arrival in Bangkok: DMK vs. BKK

Bangkok has two major airports. Mixing them up is a common error.

  1. Suvarnabhumi (BKK): Main international hub. Connected by the Airport Rail Link train.
  2. Don Mueang (DMK): The older hub for domestic/budget flights. No direct train to the city center yet (mostly bus/taxi).

We landed at Don Mueang (DMK). To get to the Khao San Road area cheaply, skip the taxi queue.

Transport Recommendation: Limo Bus Express

  • Cost: 150 THB ($4.20 USD)
  • Route: Direct to Khao San Road and Silom
  • Time: 40-50 minutes
  • Comfort: Air-conditioned, reclining seats, luggage space

This is significantly cheaper than a Grab/Taxi (300-500 THB) and more comfortable than the local city bus.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wrong Airport for Connections: Transferring between DMK and BKK can take 2+ hours in Bangkok traffic. Always check your airport code carefully.
  • Ignoring Weight Limits: "It's just 1kg over" does not work here. They will charge you per kilo.
  • Late Arrival: Check-in counters for budget airlines close strictly 45-60 minutes before departure. There is no leeway.

Final Thoughts

Flying low-cost in Thailand is safe and efficient if you follow the rules. By choosing Surat Thani over Koh Samui and pre-booking your luggage, you can save enough money to cover several days of accommodation. Just remember to pack a sweater for the flight!
